Growing Up with a Passion for STEAM

Growing Up with a Passion for STEAM

By Sarah Shan

As a Science teacher in the UK, my love for STEAM—especially Science—began early. However, growing up, I rarely saw women in STEM roles on TV, in books or within my community. This lack of representation persists today, with women significantly underrepresented in STEM fields globally. Despite this, my early exposure to STEAM and passion for learning shaped my journey to becoming a scientist.

For girls to envision themselves in STEM careers, we must spark their interest early and tackle barriers like stereotypes, a lack of role models, unconscious biases and concerns about work-life balance. As parents, teachers and influencers, we all play a vital role in fostering this change.

I was fortunate to grow up in an environment that nurtured curiosity. As the eldest of four, I often spent time with my dad, who worked in construction. Together, we tackled DIY projects, and he would explain the processes to me, encouraging my questions and predictions. These experiences, combined with play—building with LEGO (likely purchased for my brother but shared between us)—ignited my curiosity and critical thinking skills.

Early Exposure to STEM

Introducing girls to STEM early is critical for developing essential problem-solving skills and boosting confidence. STEM toys can break down gender stereotypes and promote inclusivity, making learning both enjoyable and interactive. Activities like designing, building, testing and improving teach resilience by showing that failure is part of the process toward success.

As a child, I loved toys like microscopes, dinosaur figures and interactive encyclopedias. Family game nights—playing dominoes, cards and strategy games like Cluedo—fostered teamwork, communication and confidence. These activities showed me that learning could be collaborative and fun, regardless of traditional gender norms.

Why Girls in STEAM Matter

Engaging girls in STEAM cultivates creativity, problem-solving and confidence, skills that benefit all children regardless of whether they pursue STEAM careers or not. By encouraging girls to explore STEM fields, we’re fostering a diverse and inclusive generation of innovators. This diversity is vital for building a more equitable society and ensuring future scientific and technological advancements reflect the world’s richness.

Tips for activating executive functioning skills with CONNETIX:

Set Up a Building Challenge:

Encourage your child to create a specific structure, like a bridge or a house, using a limited number of tiles. This fosters creativity while promoting problem-solving.

Create Pattern Games:

Make a game out of creating specific patterns. You can set a timer to see how quickly they can replicate a design or come up with their own.

Memory Games:

Have your child build a small structure with 10 tiles or more. Then ask them to close their eyes and take away a tile. See if they can locate where the missing tile came from!

Collaborative Projects:

Organise playdates where kids can work together to build something larger, encouraging teamwork and social skills.

Frequent Play Sessions:

Make CONNETIX play a regular activity. The more they play, the more their cognitive skills will develop.

" By empowering girls with opportunities in STEAM, we are not only laying the foundation for their future but also shaping a world where innovation and creativity thrive through diversity. "

Let’s support girls in discovering their potential and inspire them to build, explore and dream big with tools like CONNETIX.
