3 Challenging Christmas Builds for Older Kids with the CONNETIX Rainbow Mega Pack

Looking for some fun and engaging Christmas activities to keep older kids entertained this holiday season? Here are three of my favourite Christmas builds using the CONNETIX Rainbow Mega Pack that add just the right amount of difficulty and a unique twist to classic games! These ideas are ideal for older kids (and parents too!) who enjoy a bit of challenge, creativity, and hands-on fun. From a rainbow gift coin drop to colour-matching Christmas trees and a festive ball run, these builds will light up your holiday playtime with excitement and cheer.

1. Rainbow Gifts Coin Drop

The Rainbow Gifts Coin Drop is a fun twist on the classic arcade-style game – now played vertically on a magnetic wall! I created six “gifts” in the rainbow colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, each square topped with a ribbon for an extra festive touch. Below these colourful gift boxes, I set up two small cars crafted from the Mega Pack car bases, which are ready to catch the coins.

Here’s where the excitement comes in: players guess where their coin will drop and choose where to place their car accordingly! It’s a blend of timing, judgement and luck, making for a game that’s as educational as it is playful. We enjoy keeping a tally of how many coins each person can catch in a row, adding a dash of friendly competition and quick thinking. This coin drop activity livens up the holiday setup, offering a unique mix of suspense and festive fun!

2. Holiday Toss – Match the Colours on the Christmas Trees

Holiday Toss brings colour-matching fun right to the magnetic wall (or a sturdy magnetic whiteboard, if you don’t have a wall setup). For this activity, I created Christmas tree “targets” arranged in rainbow colour order, each tree situated in its own matching colour box.

The goal: using lightweight ping pong balls, players try to toss them into the corresponding-coloured boxes on the trees.
For an added challenge, set a timer to see how many balls can land in the correct colour box within a minute. We’ve even tried a few trick shots, bouncing the balls off walls or tables to land in the right box – it’s all about precision, hand-eye coordination, and a little holiday magic. This activity combines skill and laughter, bringing bursts of colour and cheer to our Christmas play!

3. Ball Run Rainbow Christmas Tree – No Ball Run Tubes Needed!

The Ball Run Rainbow Christmas Tree brings the excitement of a classic ball run without needing any ball run tubes! Constructed in a tree shape using rainbow-coloured tiles, this run is perfect for lightweight ping pong balls, which roll smoothly down the narrow track. The joyful sounds of balls bouncing and rolling add to the festive ambiance, turning this into both a game and a sensory experience.

These three trickier Christmas builds with the CONNETIX Rainbow Mega Pack have brought endless joy to our family, combining creativity, playfulness and festive spirit all in one! Each activity has provided hours of entertainment, challenged our skills and encouraged my kids to explore their creativity as we’ve gathered to celebrate the holiday season.
